Club story and culture
Rugby Club Groningen traces its roots to 1967, when Koos Kuiper brought together several rugby groups in the city, students and locals united into one club. That merger set the tone for a welcoming rugby home in the north. rugbyclubgroningen.nl
Early success followed, with promotion to the Ereklasse in 1972, then a spell attached to football club Be Quick 1887 from 1974 as subsidies shifted. The club kept growing, launching the Lady Bears women’s team in 1979, a clear signal that rugby in Groningen belonged to everyone. rugbyclubgroningen.nl
By the mid eighties the paths of students and citizens diverged, the GSRC student club was founded in 1986, and Rugby Club Groningen continued to build as a community club. A youth department arrived in 1995, and today the pathway runs from minis to seniors, with multiple men’s sides, the Lady Bears and a thriving social scene around the famous third half. rugbyclubgroningen.nl
On and off the field the club keeps investing. In 2018 a rugby artificial pitch was laid at the Koos Kuiper Kasteel, giving more space for training and growth. The calendar now features packed intro courses and the club’s own Groningen Tens tradition, a proper northern festival of rugby. rugbyclubgroningen.nl+1
If you are new to the city, you will find RCG a true hub for the region, a place where internationals, students and locals mix across teams and age grades, all powered by the same love of rugby. rugbyclubgroningen.nl
