Rugby and culture go hand in hand, Nowhere is that clearer than in Leiden, home of LRC DIOK, one of the most storied rugby clubs in the Netherlands. Together with DIOK, we at Rugby Culture have created a polo that doesn’t just look sharp, it brings back the culture of DIOK and celebrates the traditions that shaped them.
Who Are DIOK?
For the uninitiated, DIOK stands for Doorzetten Is Onze Kracht, “Perseverance Is Our Strength.” That motto has been the backbone of the club since its founding on 28 March 1971, Born out of student rugby energy in Leiden, with the support of the Leidsch Studenten Rugby Gezelschap (LSRG), the club quickly established itself as a force in Dutch rugby.
By 1975, DIOK had earned promotion to the Ereklasse, the top level of Dutch rugby. From there, history was written.
A Golden Era in Dutch Rugby
Between 1989 and 1999, DIOK dominated the game, winning ten Ereklasse championships in a row, a run so impressive it landed them in the Guinness Book of Records. Their success didn’t stop there, national titles followed again in 2019 and 2022, proving that perseverance is more than just a motto, it’s a tradition.
Today, DIOK stands as a pillar of rugby in Leiden, proudly representing the city at the highest level.
More Than a Club
What makes DIOK special isn’t just the silverware, it’s the community. The club now fields four men’s teams, a women’s team, and a thriving youth academy, stretching from Minis to Colts. They also support touch rugby and even wheelchair rugby, making the club truly inclusive for everyone who loves the game.
This combination of elite performance and grassroots heart is what makes Diok rugby a true cultural cornerstone.
